Marty Vadis

We are pleased to announce the November 18, 2010 SME Twin Cities Luncheon:

Speaker: Marty Vadis, Director, DNR Lands and Minerals Division

Title: Mining and Mineral Exploration in Minnesota

Abstract: Marty K. Vadis is Director of the Division of Land & Minerals of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. In his presentation, he will review the current status of Minnesota’s mining industry and mineral development projects.

The Division’s major responsibilities include managing 12 million acres of state-owned mineral rights; regulating exploratory drilling for minerals, in coordination with the Minnesota Department of Health, by registering exploratory borers and inspecting drilling activities; regulating mining and reclamation through a Permit to Mine; and providing real estate services to support the resource goals of the state.

The Division thus is responsible for managing mineral exploration and mine development on state-owned and tax-forfeited lands to generate equitable rental and royalty income for the state's School and University trust funds, local communities, and the state's General Fund; as well as ensuring that mineral development is environmentally sound, and that mined areas are reclaimed to be safe, free of pollution, and suitable for future use.

Mr. Vadis has been employed with the Department of Natural Resources for 36 years and resides in Hibbing, Minnesota. He holds degrees in Geology and Geological Engineering from the University of Minnesota and is a Registered Professional Engineer and Registered Professional Geologist.
