Speakers: Bethany Kelly and Omid Mohseni, Barr Engineering
Topic: Managing the Risks of Tailings Basins

Bios: Bethany Kelly joined Barr in 2007, after graduating from Montana Tech with a master’s degree in geological engineering.  She is a senior geotechnical engineer, working on dams and related work. Omid Mohseni is a senior water resources engineer, working in hydrologic and hydraulic analysis and modeling of watersheds, rivers, hydraulic structures, stormwater, and lakes.

2019 SME Student Awards Luncheon!
On May 1, 2019, UMN Dean of Science and Engineering Mos Kaveh provided remarks, and he presented SME Student Chapter awards, sponsored by SME MN & SME TC: the Don Yardley Award to Alicia Stone; the Gene Pfleider Award to Camryn Schmidt; & the Gust Bitsianes Award to Sally Nguyen. Concurrently, the Ernest K. Lehmann Memorial Scholarship is a National award. Shown here are the Dean, Sally, and SME TC Chair Louis Rudnicki. Congratulations, students!

Minnesota scores at the SME 2019 National meeting in Denver! The MEC Partnership Appreciation Award was given to the Minnesota Museum of Mining. Accepting the award was Mary Bovitz from the museum.


The 2019 SME Twin Cities Student Awards luncheon featured speaker Nathan Mara of UMN Chemical Engineering - Wednesday, May 1, 2019, University of Minnesota Campus Club, 403 Coffman Memorial Union, 300 Washington Ave SE, Minneapolis MN 55455, 1130 AM to 1 PM


Speaker:  Nathan A. Mara, Associate Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities

Topic:  Damage-tolerant nanomaterials: structural stability under extreme conditions

Bio: Dr. Mara joined UMN in 2017, after having played leadership roles in materials science and nanoscale electronics at Los Alamos National Laboratory. His research is on nanoscale microstructure and mechanical behavior of materials in extreme environments.

Speaker: Glenn Barr, Director of Engineering at Twin Metals Minnesota LLC


Topic: Twin Metals Minnesota - Project Technical Overview and Conceptual Project Configuration
Bio: Glenn has worked for TMM since 2011, first as Director of Processing and then Director of Engineering. Before that, he worked for 3 years for consulting firm Stantec as a mining sector Senior Specialist, and prior to that, 11 years with Teck Resources as a metallurgist and senior project leader.




The 2019 SME Twin Cities Conference will be held October 8th. Luncheons at Metropolitan Ballroom, 5418 Wayzata Blvd, Golden Valley, MN, 1130 AM to 1 PM, will be held Nov 21, 2019, and on January 16 and February 2020, 2020. SME National will be in Phoenix, February 23-26, 2020. The 2020 SME Duluth Conference will be held in April. The SME TC Student Awards luncheon will be held at the U on May 6, 2020. We will plan to hold SME night at the Twins again next June.

Topic: Polymet Mining: NorthMet Project 2019 Update
Bio: Christie Kearney, P.E., is the Environmental Site Director at PolyMet Mining in Hoyt Lakes. She has been doing environmental permitting and engineering for 20 years, include 12 years on the PolyMet project.

Speaker: Derrick Dasenbrock, MnDOT

Topic: The impact of land instability and landslides on Minnesota's roads and bridges

Bio: Derrick has been a geotechnical engineer with the Minnesota Department of Transportation since 1995, working in geotechnical exploration, lab testing, and field monitoring and instrumentation programs. He has a Bachelor's degree from the U of Maryland and a Masters degree from UMN.
